5 Tips for a Smooth Steak Smash Session

If you're planning a western-themed first birthday session, a steak smash is such a fun (and delicious-looking) twist on the traditional cake smash. Here's what I recommend to help the whole thing go smoothly:

1. Golden hour works best for outdoor sessions. I schedule sessions around that gorgeous late-day light, so the best thing you can do on your end is plan feeding and rest time around it. A well-fed, well-rested little one during golden hour makes all the difference.

2. Bring a backup outfit. Things get messy fast — a simple onesie or diaper-only look works great once the smash starts, so don't stress about the "mess" ruining anything.

3. Let them explore at their own pace. Some babies dive right in, others need a minute to warm up to it. Both make for beautiful photos — the curious, hesitant moments are often just as sweet as the gleeful ones.

4. A little hungry (not starving) works in your favor. Genuine excitement about the food in front of them tends to make for the best, most authentic reactions.

5. Bring a quick cleanup kit. A portable tub, wipes, and a towel nearby make the after-session reset painless for everyone.
